Freemans Bay Residence: Salmond Reed Architects

Engaged by a returning client, we undertook a detailed renovation and extension in collaboration with Salmond Reed Architects, honouring the home’s high architectural pedigree as a rare mid-century icon originally designed by Russel Withers.

“We’ve worked with Origin on several renovations since the 2010s. Every project has been complex, and each time they’ve worked thoughtfully through the challenges to deliver an excellent result.

Our latest project was smaller in scale, but possibly the most intricate. The house – a double-brick build from 1972 – has a quirky plan, with curving walls and detailed brickwork throughout. We needed a sensitive upgrade to create a modern kitchen, renovate an existing upstairs bathroom, add a new bathroom downstairs, build a laundry nook, and complete extensive hard landscaping.

Brendon and John assembled an outstanding team, various members of whom worked with us over the course of a year. Special mention goes to Caleb, who completed most of the interior work. He built all of the kitchen and bathroom cabinetry from scratch in Origin’s workshop then eased and cajoled it into place.

We believe our home is an architectural gem worth preserving, but it wasn't equipped for modern life when we bought it. Origin helped us strike the right balance between renovation and conservation, and we’re thrilled with the result. I recommend this team if you’re looking for honesty, reliability, craftsmanship, and smarts. I’m happy to talk to prospective clients over the phone and answer your questions.”
